Almost every motorcyclist has a childhood story when he first saw a motorcycle, how it was rolled in the cradle of a side trailer or on a gas tank. Until now, there are enough memories when, as a young naive teenager, he tried to sit on someone’s bike without preparation, fears that the motorcycle is completely uncontrollable and ferocious technology stretch from there. How many people are afraid of a motorcycle because of a bad trip as a child? It is another matter when the question of joining the motoworld was approached seriously, pushing the method of self-tying to the background.
How to ride a motorcycle with children?
Even if you are not in a hurry to put your child on a training bike or allow him too much on his own, we will refresh our memory of the rules for transporting children. The question is quite relevant for parents who do not want to give up the bike because of their children.
First of all, we run into traffic rules, where it is clearly stated that children under 12 years old cannot sit on a motorcycle on their own in the back seat. The exception is the scooter, where the age limit starts from 7 years old.
It’s no secret that since you can’t put a child behind a driver, many people put him in front of them on a gas tank. The logic here is simple: if the child cannot resist himself, there is always an option to control him in front of him. It is not always convenient for both the child and the driver himself.
There are two ideal scenarios for transporting children:
- The presence of a side trailer
- Use of motorcycle seat belts: They are also called motorcycle sling, meaning like kangaroo bags. Belts that secure the baby by tying the baby to the driver’s body.
Speaking of belts. They are used both for the child in front of you and for the one sitting behind you. This way you will not worry that the teenager will fall without your knowledge.
Otherwise, it is not recommended to drive at a speed higher than 50 km / h and refrain from sudden maneuvers. Yes, yes, you as a dashing racer will be bored, but the child is not so scared. In addition, with a sharp maneuver, the child is likely to be simply not ready for such a rapid change in events.
It is difficult to travel long distances with a child. Especially when the route takes the whole day, as the teenager becomes fatigued. Therefore, you should make frequent stops on the road.
Other rules concerning the carriage of children and adolescents will repeat those generally accepted for other passengers. We multiply them by 100% of reinsurance and vigilance, only after that we move on the road! Sometimes you have to rearrange the footrests or take care of the footrest and handgrips if the standard equipment does not allow the teenager to sit at the driver normally.
Teaching a child to ride a motorcycle
Immediately you need to understand who wants to ride: the child himself or do you want him to be able to?
Parents often take their child to karting schools first of all, since they are more common and four points of support are more reliable than two, plus not fall too high. It is really possible to find a separate motorcycle school for kids only in motor sports, but not in every city such privileges exist.
The format of preparing a child for riding a motorcycle is worth looking at motocross schools. Before putting a child behind the wheel on a real (albeit small) motorcycle, he must learn to react to the situation and maintain balance without giving up control.
Not so long ago I was in one of the old school motocross schools. To prepare the kids, I saw a separate simulator. The essence is elementary – an imitation of a motorcycle without wheels and supported by a spring. Yes, you have probably met something similar more than once in entertainment complexes. The meaning is unchanging, just not so beautiful and without plastic, lighting, music. The child sits in the saddle and holds onto the steering wheel. His task is not to fall. Squeezing levers or shifting gears is out of the question. The spring is rigid enough that the deflection from the vertical follows the slopes of the motorcycle without sudden changes or too sharp corners.
Later, the child is transferred to a child’s motorcycle with additional wheels so that the student does not lose balance. Further training depends on the chosen direction. By and large, motorcycling is a good option for the development of a teenager into a future conscious motorcyclist. In preparation for performances, competitions, the child learns basic skills, develops muscle memory and learns to understand the structure of a motorcycle. The stunt riding direction is becoming an original alternative.
Education for children and adolescents should always take place at special sites. The advantage of training in a motorsport environment is isolation from public roads and support from experienced instructors, something that young self-taught people may not be able to do. Parents warmly welcome the teaching of children off the city track. Doing it right, I must say, the city and the training ground are very different things!
The interest of parents, who do not consider the motorcycle to be something from the category of eaters of baby souls, gave rise to the development of children’s motorsport, the formation of new schools and the proposals of manufacturers for equipment for different ages. Now, in motorcycle shops, you can easily pick up equipment for a young motorcycle racer or a little tourist who just rides with daddy fun.
