How to ride on gravel and rubble on a motorcycle?

Gravel road – for some reason everyone thinks that it is found only on the roads outside the city and if you do not have an enduro, then you need to manage to find gravel. However, during road repairs and even on not very popular detours, pits or level drops are generously filled with rubble. In megacities, less often, but in small towns, rubble for the road, like a plantain, is scattered by a couple of cars over potholes – the road is not painful.

Oh, how many wishes for good and long life are expressed by the townspeople, to those who covered the road with small stones (especially in summer, when the soles of the shoes are thin), cyclists and mothers who drag strollers along this obstacle course, like barge haulers on the Volga. Motorcyclists are also not happy with the rubble on the horizon. Why is it so dangerous and how to drive on a gravel road?

Gravel and crushed stone, is there a difference?

Suddenly, there is still a difference. We will not delve into unnecessary details, we will analyze what is important to us.

Gravel is stones hewn by natural conditions. They usually have smoothed edges, with different sizes of fractions. The main difference from crushed stone in smooth shapes, which are made up of the effects of wind, water and other things. At the same time, gravel is constantly brought with sand, which is used for sprinkling roads and there are even classifications in which sand with gravel has its own name and is used in construction. On roads, gravel is usually fine.

Crushed stone is a rough and angular result of crushing large cobblestones, limestone or boulders. Even with a small fraction, it will still remain chopped around the edges. When dropped, crushed stone scratches much stronger than rounded gravel.

Usually, pits or whole sections of the road are covered with rubble.

Why is a gravel road dangerous?

A gravel road is in many ways similar to sandy or muddy areas, since in all cases the surface is particularly mobile. You balance like on ice, a little scary.

The size of the crushed stone, its quantity and how well the road is rolled is of great importance. It’s one thing to get to a site where rubble was sprinkled recently, which means it will be more difficult to drive on it. Rocks will begin to roll and sink under the motorcycle. It’s another matter when only cobblestones around the edges and in the center remind of a gravel road, between which there are already quite bearable ruts, carefully left by cars.

The larger the stones on the road, the more difficult it is to drive on them. The steering wheel will start to convulse. If the driver grabs the steering wheel too hard, the vibrations from the steering will be transmitted to the body, and then the whole motorcycle will wag in a chain and long live wobling!

Stones flying out from under the wheels

When driving on sand, a sand cloud remains behind the motorcyclist. The release of sand from under the rear wheel with excessive gas supply causes trouble for the rear rider. If you inadvertently turn on the gas, then small stones can be thrown out by the wheel. Because of this danger, the distance between vehicles on the gravel road should be increased.

Rocks sometimes get stuck in the tire tread and then fly out when accelerating. Needless to say, how quickly the rubber shrinks when driving for a long time on large rubble?

How to drive on gravel road and rubble?

The rules for driving on sand and mud also work on gravel roads, but you should always make allowances for the specific situation:

  1. You need a constant cruising speed, usually no higher than 60-80 km / h, allowing you to smoothly maneuver and not fall;
  2. If you suddenly find yourself on a gravel road and do not have time to slow down, then beware of abrupt changes in speed – do not brake or accelerate too sharply;
  3. Braking with the engine or rear brake, it is better not to work with the front one, so as not to dig in with the wheel;
  4. You need to unload the front fork, sit closer to the rear wheel or stand up on the footpegs if the motorcycle is too dangerous to wobble;
  5. Minimum tilt of the motorcycle. When the wheel is tilted, slipping on stones or digging in may occur;
  6. Relaxed fit and steering control without being too rigid;
  7. Turns along a wide smooth trajectory;
  8. Increase the distance if there are several vehicles on the road in order to protect yourself from stones flying out from under the wheels;
  9. If it is possible to prepare for a gravel road, then you can increase the contact patch due to less pressure in the wheels;
  10. Adjustment of the suspension for greater rigidity is possible;
