Motorcycle glasses, what are there and how to choose them

If we talk about motorcycle glasses, then usually retro aviators or cross-country ones are immediately presented, such is the associative array for most users. Let’s take a closer look at what motorcycle glasses are, what are their features?

Who needs motorcycle glasses?

Owners of helmets with built-in goggles feel like a horse in such moments, because for them the issue of glasses has long been resolved. Otherwise, glasses are an alternative to the visor.

Everything is clear with representatives of extreme sports. For crossmen and enduro enthusiasts, glasses are the most convenient replacement for a visor that can be. In addition, they are elasticated, which allows them to be used with any helmet, if necessary, they can be quickly removed and not lost during the race.

There are two more options for moto glasses, let’s call them conditionally – city glasses with an elastic band and classic moto glasses with seals without an elastic band.

Motorcycle glasses with an elastic band are chosen mainly by those with an open helmet. The elastic band provides additional fixation and ensures that the glasses will not go anywhere from the face, even in the event of strong headwinds.

Motorcycle glasses with seals, but without an elastic band – they are most often chosen by motorcyclists with a closed helmet, who do not carry a spare visor with them. The logic is simple: there is no great need for an elastic band, because few people want to spend time on a chain of manipulations: take off a motorcycle helmet, a comforter, then put on glasses, a comforter and a helmet again … And if you need to take them off, then all over again is dreary. Such glasses are kept on the face due to the seals that adhere to the skin. And since the helmet is closed, the glasses will not fall out further than the helmet, if they suddenly fly off the face and can be corrected quickly through the visor.

Don’t have the ability or desire to take a spare visor on the road? Stay transparent, but take moto glasses with a colored lens. Do you want to catch the wind with your face and it’s hot in the summer in the visor? Yes, no problem, you take off the glass and only wear glasses!

Motorcycle construction and materials

In the article where we discussed what to do if the vision is not sharp enough, the issue of glasses has already been raised.

For any glasses that are used on a motorcycle not only by drivers, but also by passengers, two rules are true:

  • glasses are matched under the helmet, not vice versa. If the glasses do not fit into the helmet or are uncomfortable, we change the glasses. The helmet is the first and most important thing that protects you, so we adjust the glasses to fit it. If you choose motorcycle goggles, be sure to try them on with your helmet. Many people buy glasses without trying them on, and then it turns out that they feel different inside the helmet or the frame is large.

  • Motorcycle glasses should be free of glass and metal parts. Any detail that, in theory, could damage the face makes the model potentially dangerous.

Manufacturers have conducted more than one crash test to create safe motorcycle glasses. Now, there are no models with glass lenses or metal frames on the shelves. Everything has been replaced with more durable and less traumatic plastic. Polycarbonate is definitely in the top of the materials here. Lenses are often made from the same types of plastics as full-size visors.

Pay attention to ventilation. If the space inside the glasses is hermetically sealed, then a situation will occur, like your helmet, which fogs up due to the temperature difference. By the way, many glasses lenses are treated with a special coating against rain and condensation, known to all as Anti-fog and Anti-rain. The location of the ventilation ducts around the glasses raises questions. Some say that they should be on the bottom, because when it rains, it will flood the eyes of those who have ventilation on the sides or on top with glasses. On the other hand, what difference does it make which side of the hole, if you wear motorcycle glasses in a helmet, and there they are not threatened with rain. But everyone unconditionally agrees that ventilation should be good.

The wider the seals on the motorcycle glasses, the tighter they will adhere to the skin. There is nothing new here. It’s just that thin seals will keep weaker because of the smaller area.

The color of the lens of the glasses is chosen according to the weather and the expected effect. We talked about this a lot in the article on visors. Recently, the opinion has begun to appear more often that lenses with a “multicolor” coating, also known as “rainbow”, reflect such an amount of sunlight that it occupies the most advantageous position among all. From myself, I note that each person has his own personal light and color perception, therefore the selection of the lens is purely individual.

Motocross goggles

Motocross and enduro goggles are not as simple as they seem. Not everyone knows that they have a secret, namely a reel of film rewind or a set of tear-off tapes. In terms of these are known as “rippers” and “rewind”. The system was designed specifically to save time for motorcycle riders, whose route rarely passes through clean roads.

The principle of operation of the rewind system is as follows: two reels are attached to the glasses, one feeds the film, the other takes it from the other side (note that not all glasses have mounts for such gadgets). The film itself passes through the middle of the glasses and is placed on a special coating that prevents the film from sticking. When the glasses are covered with dust or dirt, it is enough to press a special lever and the film is rewound on the glasses, a fresh tape comes out from the releasing reel, and the contaminated one is wound from the other side onto the receiving one.

“Vipers” are a layering of film on glasses. They are good because they completely cover all the glasses, and not part of them, as in the story with coils. The bottom line is to remove the film using a special strap. After the layer has been removed, the strap of the next film is released. Manufacturers assure that it will not be possible to remove all layers at once.
