Motorcyclists are often compared to airplane pilots, and the very expression “motorcycle pilot” sounds much more interesting than just “driver”. A helmet with integrated sunglasses only adds to this original resemblance. Not all motorcyclists choose such helmets, however, they are still in demand. Why?
Initially, helmets that are used in conjunction with goggles can be divided into three categories:
- The most famous for cross and enduro, the glasses for which are always on an elastic band for reasons of maximum convenience, simplicity and banal time saving
- Open helmets, glasses can be built-in, or can be with an elastic band
- Closed helmets, modulars and integrals with built-in glasses

Convenience and ease of use
Now we are talking about models whose goggles are built into the structure of the helmet. Pilots love these helmets for their ease of use. Usually, a motorcyclist has to carry two visors with him: transparent and tinted. Replacing the visor for the weather is very annoying and time-wasting. Moreover, sometimes there is simply no time for replacement! Everyone had a situation of being blinded by a bright light on the way, don’t go to a fortune-teller here. Built-in glasses save you without any emergency stops. You press the lever on the helmet and now the glasses are in action, the problem is solved in a couple of seconds. No stopping to touch, no need to fiddle with the visor, if you still have it with you at all, and not forgotten on your desk at home.
These endless complaints that the helmet is stuffy, the helmet is hot, I will ride in a headscarf like a trush biker because it blows … The owners of helmets with goggles act cunningly: at low speeds or in traffic jams, they raise the visor of the helmet, but ride in glasses. The breeze and flies do not bite! Brilliant.
The main thing is not to forget to return the visor to its place when increasing the speed. It’s not even so much about the resistance to the oncoming air flow, the problem may arise in the loosening of the mechanism that holds the visor itself. In any case, the presence of glasses allows you to advantageously combine the use of a visor and glasses.
Cons of built-in glasses
If everything were so great, then the built-in goggles would be in all helmets without exception. But we see that on the shelves in stores they offer very different options. What are the disadvantages of having built-in glasses?
Total helmet weight
On professional racing tracks, you will not find helmets with built-in goggles. Why? Because built-in glasses are extra weight. The mechanism and the goggles themselves significantly increase the overall weight of the helmet, so not all pilots are happy with this result.
This is the main fad that makes motorcyclists look warily at helmets with integrated goggles. Firstly, it happens that when driving over holes or bumps, the glasses spontaneously drop, which discourages the pilot with its unexpected appearance. Secondly, if you read the sad statistics and talk to the rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations or ambulance doctors, it turns out that the glasses in the event of an accident injure the driver’s face. Not always, but glasses are punctured or crumbled. Most often, they fly out into the driver’s nose entirely if the impact of the helmet was too strong or fell in the place of the fastening mechanism.
The glasses fog up no less than the visor. But if you can pick up a pinlock on the visor, then sometimes difficulties arise with glasses.
High cost and variability
Helmets with built-in goggles tend to be more expensive. How do you want? If you enter a minute of math, it turns out that a simple purchase of a helmet with a regular visor and a second visor matched to replace it is at the price equal to a helmet with built-in glasses. This is not always remembered when they see an ordinary helmet at a lower price, when there is a good one next to it, but with glasses and more expensive.
Variability matters for pilots who want to choose a second visor on their own, rather than a ready-made set of clear visor and tinted glasses. For those who like to torment themselves with a choice, the lack of options for the development of events becomes an argument against such a purchase. Well, for the pilots who do not want to bother, God himself commanded to take a full-set helmet.
And the last fly in the ointment in this rich barrel of honey is the distortion on the sides. Clarity of perception of the world through the prism of a visor and glasses is a fundamental characteristic of any manufacturer. Sometimes pilots complain that visual distortion occurs on the sides, at the periphery of the glasses, due to the double lens.
Helmets with built-in goggles have proven themselves well both in tourist travel and in heavy city traffic. The convenience of using such helmets is difficult to deny, even with the above design disadvantages.
