The subtleties of transporting a motorcycle – what else is useful to know?

We talked about transporting a motorcycle in different ways in the previous article, but at this point it is useful to take into account the tools that are useful for this and several technical steps.

Wheel trap

A wheel trap, also known as a front wheel lock, is required for almost any method of transportation. This structure, often collapsible, has a wheel structure that is screwed to the floor surface and prevents the motorcycle from falling. It can be either an independent element or with an extension of the strip for the entire length of the motorcycle (usually the pilots themselves finish it).

The trap is used for partial loading when there is no other convenient way to fix the motorcycle. They just mount the trap to the body, fix the wheel and here’s a partial loading of the motorcycle! There are a lot of traps, these can be factory and homemade constructions. The main thing is that it reliably holds the motorcycle and does not injure the wheel.

Often, traps are supplemented with trolleys for the rear wheel and, of course, with belt ties, since if the turn during transportation turns out to be too steep, the rear of the motorcycle can outweigh by inertia, if it does not have additional support, slip to the side and damage the front wheel. Not always, but once a year even such a stick fires.

Additional fixation stands

You do not have to suffer with a wheel trap and make racks for wheels along the entire length of the trailer, pickup truck, car body. They are boiled from pipes, collected from wooden beams. Very convenient for transporting multiple motorcycles. Attach two parallel pipes and divide it into pieces for the size of the wheel so that it does not turn. As a result, we have symbolic traps to which it is possible to catch on with cords or ties.

There is one interesting advantage to assembling from wood: instead of a separate flooring, people use wood flights. The method can be seen in the transportation of motorcycles on a production scale, but take a lightweight format for yourself. In addition, the tree is lighter in weight, it does not need a welder either, the main thing is that the nails do not stick out.

Harnesses, cords and straps for fastening

What … what else to secure the bike to prevent it from falling? It is very scary to take simple harnesses or cords for an hour, because rounded, braided, embossed cords like to leave scratches / abrasions on the body of the bike. One or two modest motorcycle inclines and here’s a clearing on a new surface!

Ideally, use flat belts as they distribute the load evenly due to their width. Personally, I generally like the car seat belts theme. Even when they are not in the garage, then at any auto disassembly they will be given to you for change just like that, most likely. If they were designed so as not to harm a person, then they should not be a motorcycle either: wide, dense, long – great.

There are specialized belts with loops and hooks. You choose whether to buy ready-made or do it yourself.

The tension should be such that the motorcycle does not wobble. Attach the belts to secure parts such as the frame or roll bars.

Carabiners or rings for fasteners

– Okay, I have belts, but why besides a motorcycle they should be fastened?

As practice shows, many who do not ask themselves the question of powerful preparation of transport for transportation, fix it to what they have to. But when you are a perfectionist and once started, it should be Feng Shui … The carabiners are convenient because you can open them and attach them to any other surface that is convenient. They are mobile. However, there is an obvious disadvantage, their mobility is +5 to the mobility of the structure when there is not enough tension force. All sorts of rings, especially construction ones, which you screw into the floor or into a separate plate, which you will lay down, are static. They are inactive. You hook the belt and that’s it, the question is settled!

There is a third option, for those who like to break their brains, but do it perfectly. Parts sticking out of the body sometimes annoy and interfere, you climb into the body and stumble. But what if you make a structure that will not stick out? It’s one thing when the body of the car allows you to catch on the side walls so that nothing gets in the way. And when there is no such possibility?

We return to the flooring, which spreads to the floor before transportation. This is beneficial from the point of view of purity, since you never know what technical fluids will spill along the way? And so you choose a thicker coating and mount it inside. Make a technical hole with internal fastening, or insert something like hooks or inner rings there, only direct them not vertically, but into the hole in the horizontal plane. Here, who is good for what. The main thing is to arrange the fasteners so that the belts can be hooked inside the plate and only the belt assembly sticks out from above. And then you can go further with the coating and carry something else there without clinging to the protruding rings.

Case or film

When transportation is carried out in the open air, without an awning or a body, you risk getting mountains of dust and dirt upon arrival. Do you need it? It is still safer to drive a motorcycle covered with a cover. In extreme cases, you can wrap it in foil. At least some additional protection. And yes, if you accidentally catch roadside vegetation somewhere, the protective coating will also play into your hands here!

Removing fragile and protruding parts

Obviously, but let’s repeat it just in case. Protruding parts that are terribly damaged or broken off on the road should either be completely removed or the bolt should be loosened and pressed against the motorcycle, for example, mirrors. Remove hanging bags too. Why do you need them now? Suffering to drag a motorcycle into a trailer loaded is generally the original plan of a masochist. Remove all unnecessary and unnecessary before transportation.

Disconnect battery and alarm

In order not to stop on the way due to unexpected trills of the alarm, which may be triggered for some external reasons, it is recommended to turn it off during transportation. And the battery is also taken out quite often, because at the moment it is not such an important part.

Insulation of protruding cables and wires

Tighten all protruding wires with clamps or something. It is very unpleasant to get caught with a cable when you bring a motorcycle to its rightful place for further travel. And it is even more offensive to catch yourself on this cable, when it would seem that the trick is in the bag. Likewise for electrical wiring.
