Violations and accidents – statistics for the first half of 2020

Motorcyclists are constantly accused of the fact that they are the ones who most often get into accidents and are the source of troubles on public roads – they reckless, break, speed and prevent civilians from sleeping at night. But it is possible to draw any conclusions only from official statistics, so it will be most fair. So we asked ourselves the question, under what conditions did accidents occur most often in the first half of this year?

To begin with, let’s take a look at the Information and Analytical Review for the first half of 2020, provided by the Scientific Center for Road Safety (is publicly available on the official website). According to the report, in the first half of 2020, statistics look better than last year’s data (see the plate on the left). At the same time, the self-isolation regime had a great influence on reducing the accident rate, due to which there were fewer people on the roads, and this accordingly reduced the number of accidents. It is noted that with the completion of the self-isolation regime, road accidents increased again.

Not in defense of motorcyclists, because accidents happen through their fault too, but according to statistics, motorists still violate traffic rules more often. Of course, you need to take into account the seasonality and the ratio of the number of cars and motorcycles on the road … But the data says this:

A decrease in the number of accidents and the number of injured with the participation of motor vehicles was recorded – in 3169 (-5.9%) road accidents, 3368 (-5.9%) people were injured, while the number of deaths in such accidents increased – 375 (+ 5.9%) people …

In the first half of 2020, there was a significant increase in the number of fatalities in road accidents due to traffic violations by taxi drivers.

When do accidents occur more often?

The largest number of road accidents and the number of people injured in them were registered on Friday. Expected! Many are in a hurry and distracted on Friday, mentally planning the weekend.

Although it is considered to be the most dangerous time of the night, according to statistics, the most dangerous time of the day for the first half of 2020 was the period from 17:00 to 20:00. In the dark, only 34.1% of road traffic accidents occurred, of their total number, while 3,025 people died (46.6% of the total number of deaths).

The risk of accidents at night is due to the severity of the injuries. As they say in the Scientific Center for Road Safety, the severity of the consequences of an accident in the dark is almost twice as high as in the daytime.

More than half of all road accidents occurred in clear weather (58.1%), every third (33.4%) – in cloudy weather.

So, unfavorable meteorological conditions – fog, rain, snowfall – have a point seasonal effect on the value of the main indicators of road traffic accidents.

Thus, the analysts concluded that, first of all, the human factor, the level of adaptation to weather conditions, as well as the speed and intensity of traffic flows, affect the accident rate.

Who is guilty?

The main types of road accidents were vehicle collisions (42.9%) and pedestrian collisions (26.3%).

Traditionally, the statistics of accidents are “made” by cities with a population of over one million. According to the report, the largest number of road accidents occurs in the capitals of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, but the largest number of deaths occurs in other rural settlements, where the number of road accidents is three times less than in the above-mentioned large cities. In other words: the farther from the city, the less frequent accidents, but the more serious are their consequences.

The severity of the consequences of road accidents on roads outside cities is almost three times higher than in cities! The death toll at level crossings has increased. Almost half (43.2%) of all those killed on the roads outside cities and towns were fatally injured on federal highways.

The main reason for accidents due to traffic violations by vehicle drivers was non-observance of the sequence when driving through intersections. However, the most serious consequences were characterized by road accidents associated with leaving the oncoming lane.

Among the causes of accidents, there is often the opinion that only young drivers get into an accident, they say that young men like to hooligan and have little experience. But statistics show that the largest number of road accidents (27.5%) were committed by drivers aged 30 to 40 years. But, an increase in the number of accidents and the number of injured child drivers of motor vehicles has been noticed.

Later, we made a request to find out which traffic violations were most often involved in motorcyclists. We were told that by the end of eight months of 2020, most often motorcyclists were brought to administrative responsibility for exceeding the established speed (100.6 thousand), for driving a motorcycle without a motorcycle helmet or transporting a passenger without a helmet (25 thousand), for driving a motorcycle by a driver, not having the right to drive a vehicle (24.5 thousand), for non-compliance with the requirements for compulsory civil liability insurance of owners of funds (19.5 thousand), as well as for driving a motorcycle that is not registered in the prescribed manner (14.4 thousand).

25 thousand people without a helmet! Twenty-five thousand. I don’t want to be boring, but what about saving your life, the passenger and the surrounding road users? And then motorcyclists complain that they are spoken of as reckless drivers. Really.

Recall that the most serious crime that a motorcyclist can commit and be punished for this is determined by Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. If the driver was intoxicated or left the scene of the accident, while violating the traffic rules, as a result of which people died – two or more … punishment is envisaged in the form of imprisonment for a term of eight to fifteen years with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.

I really want the statistics, in particular injuries and deaths, to get better every year. Now you know the conditions in which accidents occur most often, we hope that this information will help you to work on errors and not find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
