What troubles does the asphalt prepare? Unprovoked accidents

Unprovoked – this is the name of accidents that occurred due to the fault of the road surface, and not because of other road users. By and large, these are accidents in which the pilot himself is to blame, because he did not see (or did not want to see), did not take the necessary actions, or did not manage to do anything. There is only you, the road and the battered plastic of the motorcycle.

When driving in the city and outside of megacities, motorcyclists face various problems:

  • Slippery road
  • Sand, debris and stones
  • Pits
  • Slippery markings
  • Track

But there is more. Have you ever thought about things like converting old asphalt to new and vice versa? On the face of two probable problems:

Asphalt threshold across the road

During repairs or on obsolete sections of the road, asphalt crossings are often encountered. The motorcycle reacts to such disturbances like a hole that cannot be avoided. The bike bounces when you pull off the threshold or climb a step.

If you have not noticed the transition, then a sudden blow to your hands from a wheel collision awaits you. The question is in the level of suspension damping, the height of the threshold and the speed of hitting it. When the pilot was not ready for a hit / run, three scenarios are likely:

What to do about it?

The same thing that you do when driving through holes: we unload the front suspension, calmly drive at moderate speeds without unnecessary body movements, it is important to drive without a tilt (!) And at a right angle (at least 45 degrees).

Longitudinal threshold of asphalt

We meet with him on two occasions:

  • Carriageway edge
  • Road repair in strips

In either case, an unpleasant surprise awaits you when rebuilding. As well as when crossing railway tracks, there is a risk of falling when both wheels hit the longitudinal sill of the asphalt.

Situation. You are driving from a secondary adjoining road. Asphalt has been removed on your way. You lean inward into a bend to drive onto an empty main road without slowing down. Who doesn’t do that when there is no one around? The threshold of the new asphalt of the main road is higher than your secondary road, the tilt of the motorcycle reduces the stability of the bike. The front wheel rests on the threshold, but the inclination is too great, it starts to slide along the asphalt threshold. At one point, both of your wheels are on the doorstep and the situation gets out of control.

A similar misfortune occurs when the pilot goes to overtake. Let’s say you are driving on new asphalt, and the adjacent lane has just been removed for repair. You decided to overtake, jumped into the oncoming lane, and when you were about to return to your own, it turned out that in front of you is a longitudinal threshold made of asphalt, which does not let you back!

The opposite is just as dangerous. There are times when you are focused on the road ahead of you. Look into the distance, you start turning the steering wheel … and it wags sharply and breaks out of your hands! And then again and again! Wobling. The fall. What happened? You drove too close to the curb and struck a wheel over it, but did not go to a higher level. From this, the wheel began to throw.

What to do?

The situation is similar to the story of the track and railroad tracks. If both wheels at the same time abut against the longitudinal cut of the asphalt, and you are at the same time in a slope, then this is an application for a fall.

The best way to overcome an obstacle, passing it perpendicularly and alternately with each wheel. In other words, if you need to enter another road, then do it at a right angle, but not sharper than 45 degrees. If the cut is along the road, then try not to leave it, because it will be much, much more difficult to return to the lane.

In the story with a return from the oncoming lane to your own, in order to overcome the threshold, you will have to make a wide turning radius, because you will hardly be able to enter on a tangent.

Output:

Pay attention to bumps in the road that will require special treatment. The most annoying thing is to crash a motorcycle because of a simple obstacle that no one considers important.
