Here is the deal, you look at the site for a new cool helmet, push, choose, finally here it is, what you need! And so you look at the photos, and that way, you google in the pictures – everything is beautiful.
Made up my mind.
I ordered it.
When the helmet was brought, you take it out of the box … the coloring is the same, but only the shade is different, in some places the drawings generally merge into the general tone, but on the site it somehow looked different. I went out into the street and the helmet literally changed, everything changed due to the outflow of grain, the drawing suddenly plays differently, looks clearer. You stand in confusion, how is that magic?
By the way, motorcycles also tend to change shade under different lighting conditions. Not everyone betrays this great importance, but there are very meticulous pilots who are ready to cook a whole fire of the Inquisition for a sales assistant who assures that the helmet you ordered and the one that seems to be different in shade is the same.
What is the secret of changing the palette, albeit not cardinal, but sometimes obvious?
– Metamerism of color, – I will answer you, – the effect of metamerism.
This insidious property drank a lot of blood from color technologists, master painters and airbrush artists.
The meaning of this witchcraft is that some elements in one emission of light seem to be exactly the same, but when the light source is changed, they suddenly become different! Magic?!
Basically, the change in color, depending on the lighting, really affects your perception of the object. When you choose a motorcycle or equipment from photographs, many people simply forget in what conditions the photo was taken. When staging professional lighting, it is adjusted in such a way as to favorably highlight certain areas or show the play of glare, texture, shape, grain fraction or clarity of the pattern.
And now you, inspired by the beauty that you were deliberately pointed out to, order a helmet for yourself, hoping that it is always so emphatically magical and carved, and pick it up in a store where there is no professional point light. When you receive your purchase, be it a motorcycle, plastic or helmet, you perceive the thing WHOLE, in its entirety and in the light, the spectrum of which surrounds you.
It’s time to remember our beloved, but for someone not so much, physics. The school was long ago, but we still remember that a different spectrum of light is a different wavelength of light that is suddenly reflected from the surface and hits our retina, which perceives the reflection as a certain picture of a certain color? Come on, you really did it in school! And also, perhaps you have learned in biology that a person’s vision when perceiving a light wave consists of three indicators, changing which it is really possible to lead a person into an illusory delusion (to make him believe that yellow is red, for example) or it is beneficial to set up his own work, as in infrared light, for example, perception changes dramatically.
An example of a beneficial combination of human perception of color and manipulation of a light source is a yellow or orange visor, which, in rainy and cloudy weather, really makes it easier to get into the city, due to the fact that light passing through a colored lens makes the pilot see the traffic situation differently. as in a transparent visor.
Due to metamerism, they try to paint damaged parts of motorcycles as a whole. Firstly, it is quite difficult to pick up the paint itself to match, because the factories are trying to produce motorcycles that are original, interesting and memorable, which makes the selection problematic. Secondly, it is not always possible to paint a small area in the correct transition so that there is no pollination halo. At the exit, this is what happens. During the painting, the craftsman tries to paint the motorcycle so that the new part does not differ much from its original parts. But this is done under the illumination of the painting box / garage, where there is an additional reflection from the surrounding objects and walls. The fun begins when the bike is rolled out into the sunlight. Here you can see translucent soil in unpainted areas, and color differences on bends / corners, jambs for leveling or polishing.
Still not convinced that metamerism makes the eyes of technologists and motorcycle refiners twitch? Here is a live example of a test before painting a Yamaha motorcycle, where the same test plate dashingly changes color in daylight and under artificial light. To prove that there is only one plate, a drop of solvent was dropped in the lower corner to get a fancy print.
By the way, it’s funny when the equipment for painting is badly washed and suddenly there are particles of silver or mother-of-pearl in the paint, which should not be there. It’s just that they are not always visible, but in the sunlight they shine like a Christmas tree. How so, because everything in boxing was perfect! Metamerism.
Hence the conclusion: evaluate the color, print, texture and condition of the paintwork of both the motorcycle and the helmet under different lighting conditions. I’d like to add that sunlight at different times of the day is different! Colorists and painters know this well, noticing the treacherous effect of metamerism in the morning and evening.
